Eating Better and Food Costs
When compiling a list of new year's resolutions, many people vow to eat better in the coming year. However, there is a perception that eating well is expensive, and in today's sagging economy, food cost is a concern.
Alan Majka, an educator in the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Kennebec County office, says eating well doesn't need to be cost-prohibitive. He is available to discuss the benefit of spending limited resources on nutrient rich foods; planned vs. impulse shopping; the cost of convenience; label reading; unit pricing; and why fruits and veggies don't need to be fresh to be healthful. Majka also serves on the Maine Nutrition Council's Board of Directors.
