Cooperative Extension has provided research-based information designed to meet
the needs of Maine citizens: real knowledge for real life. Our educational
efforts focus on
- managing agriculture,
natural resources, and the environment;
- enhancing economic
opportunity; and
- encouraging lifelong
wellness.
Cooperative Extension is a nationwide
educational network, connected through the
United States Department of
Agriculture and
land-grant
universities. In Maine, we are the largest outreach unit of the University
of Maine, with 16 county offices as well as campus-based staff.
The
University of Maine
The University of Maine is
the University of Maine System’s flagship campus. Located in the town of Orono,
UMaine was founded in 1865 and stands as Maine’s only land- and sea-grant
institution. Over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all over the
world come here each semester to achieve their highest aspirations. Backed by
our nationally recognized faculty, state-of-the-art learning facilities and 184
programs of study, they are challenged to do their best work on a vibrant campus
that houses the state’s largest library. UMaine is one of the safest campuses in
the Northeast, boasting low student-faculty ratios, hands-on research for
graduates and undergraduates, and a terrific quality of life filled with
year-round recreational opportunities.
