Your commitment as a Watershed Steward
LakeSmart award

Watershed Stewards choose volunteer activities that match their interests. Examples of volunteer activities include

  • conducting a watershed survey;

  • revitalizing a lake association;

  • initiating a watershed management plan; or

  • initiating a LakeSmart Program.

Your commitment

  • Attend all training sessions (20 hours).

  • Complete reading and class assignments.

  • Report your volunteer activities to University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

  • During the year after the training, you choose how you fulfill your volunteer commitment (20 hours). Volunteer time can be done individually or in conjunction with ongoing group projects.


The Watershed Stewards Program is a volunteer program of University of Maine Cooperative Extension and LEAP, the Northern New England Lake Education and Action Project.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Water Quality Program is a partner in the CSREES New England Regional Water Quality Program. We actively participate in the following New England Regional Water Quality Focus Areas: Nutrient and Pest Management, New England Private Well Initiative, New England NEMO, Sustainable Landscapes, and Animal Waste Management.
